How to find your Core Values?

Hi, I'm Priya Sodha, career coach, and strategist focused on helping you live a more purposeful life through mindset shifting techniques. Today, we're going to talk about self awareness and how to identify your core values.  Identifying your core values are the key to having an authentic and purposeful life. By doing so there are a few techniques that I'll walk through with you today.

Before we get there, we want to talk about the why. Why should we identify our core values? Why is that important? When thinking about a career transition, we'll do any of the following statements resonate with you? Do you feel stuck? Do you feel lost? Are you having a hard time making decisions? What about your resume? How do you feel about it's direction? Do you feel hiring managers are having a hard time understanding who you are and what your personal mission is? Well, a values based approach will help you. It'll help you get to the right purpose and they'll help you determine your needs. Create more successful, personal and professional relationships and help hiring managers understand and get a better sense of who you are and what you do bring to the table.

So how, how do we do this? It's a three step approach that only takes five minutes and all you're going to need is something to write with something, to write on, a timer and a motivating space. A space, maybe it's quiet. Maybe it has music in the background, whatever motivates you when you work.

Step 1

So step one, think of three people in your life that you know, or do not know that inspire and motivate you. Could be personal, someone you work with, could be a thought leader, an author, a celebrity. And take one minute for each person writing down anything that comes to your mind about what inspires you about that person. Key words, short phrases, et cetera. Remember one minute per person, anything that comes to the top of your mind.

Step 2

Step two, this might be a little harder. Think about yourself. What inspires you and motivates you about you? What do you admire? This is a challenge. And I'm going to ask you to only take two minutes to do this because you want to think about what comes to instantly.

Step 3

Step three, you might find a common theme with all the words that you wrote down. Circle those and circle the top five. Those five are going to translate into your values. And how do you do that? Take those top five, write it down. For example, you might find that you've circled artistic or creativity. That can relate to creative. You are looking for workspace, the career transition that gives you a chance to be creative. Journal this and write it down and think about what this means to you.

Oftentimes we don't realize that we're living our personal values without exploring what they are. Thank you.
